Do solar panels work in the Scottish Highlands?

Yes. Highland solar panels generate between 840 and 925 kWh per kWp per year depending on location. A 4kW system in Inverness generates around 3,480 kWh annually. Longer summer days partly offset shorter winter days, and clean Highland air actually improves yield versus urban areas.

How much does a solar panel system cost in the Highlands?

Cost depends on system size, battery storage, roof type, and property access. A 3kW system for a cottage costs less than a 6kW system for a farmhouse with battery storage. 0% VAT applies until March 2027. The only way to get an accurate price is through a no-obligation property survey.

Can I add battery storage to my solar system?

Yes. Battery storage lets you use surplus solar electricity in the evening instead of exporting it to the grid. In areas with frequent power outages, a battery also provides backup power. A 5kWh battery is typically sufficient for a 4–5kW solar system.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?

The SEG pays you for surplus solar electricity exported to the grid. Octopus Energy pays approximately 24p/kWh under their SEG tariff. Our installer partners handle SEG registration as part of the installation package at no extra cost.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in the Highlands?

Most domestic solar installations in Scotland are permitted development and do not require planning permission. Exceptions include listed buildings, properties in conservation areas, and ground-mounted arrays exceeding 9 square metres. Our partners advise on planning during the survey.

What about crofts and traditional stone-built properties?

Our installer partners specialise in crofthold, traditional stone-built, and listed Highland properties. Ground-mounted arrays are a common solution where roof orientation or structural limitations make roof mounting unsuitable. Each property is assessed individually during the no-obligation survey.

Who handles the SSEN grid connection?

Our MCS-certified installer partners handle all SSEN grid notification as standard. Most Highland single-phase homes support up to 4kW under fast-track G98 approval. Larger systems require a G99 full application. All grid paperwork is managed by our partners as part of the installation.

Is Highland Solar Hub an installer?

No. Highland Solar Hub is a trading name of Scot Energy Efficiency Ltd, company number 17408629, registered office 66 Paul Street, London EC2A 4NA. We are a renewable energy consultancy and introducer service. We connect you with our pre-vetted network of MCS-certified installation partners who carry out the survey, quote, and installation.

Is finance available for solar installations?

Yes. Interest-free credit of up to £30,000 is available, subject to status and affordability. Terms and conditions apply.

How long does installation take?

Solar PV installation typically takes 1–2 days for a standard residential system. The full process from enquiry to installation is usually 2–6 weeks, depending on survey availability, SSEN approval times, and weather conditions in remote areas.
